Tennis Lady Bucs improving as season continues

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team were busy this week with three straight matches.

On Monday, they hosted East Fairmont and lost a 7-0 decision and then went on the road and dropped a 4-3 verdict to Robert C. Byrd and followed that up Wednesday with a 7-0 road loss to Liberty.

The closest matches for B-U against East Fairmont were a pair of 8-3 losses in doubles play by the No. 1 duo of Autumn Cutright and Alexa Davis and the No. 3 duo of Lainey Rowan and Tori Adams.

“I was happy with Autumn and Alexa’s doubles performance,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “They fought back at 7-0 to win three games which was great. At No. 3 singles, Madelyn is fighting an injury right now but still won a few games as well.”

Against Robert C. Byrd, all three B-U victories came via forfeit.

The lone victory for the Lady Bucs against Liberty came at No. 3 doubles where Lainey Rowan and Tori Adams won a hard-fought 9-8 (7-3 tiebreaker) against Hanna Fowler and Hannah Davis.

“The match lasted almost three hours and went to a tiebreaker but Lainey and Tori pulled out the win,” noted Rock. “It’s their (Lainey and Tori) first win of the season so the team was very happy and excited for them. I think Madelyn and Malia played the best I’ve seen them play all season individually and as a doubles team also. The girls are slowly getting better with more experience and it is exciting to see them start having more success on the court.”

The Lady Bucs are now 0-8 on the season.

They were slated to play Bridgeport on Friday.

They will return to action on Monday at Philip Barbour and will stay on the road Tuesday for a rematch with Bridgeport.
