Tennis Lady Bucs close out season in Region I Tournament

MORGANTOWN – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team failed to win a match at the Region I Tournament last Thursday at Morgantown’s Marilla Park.

In singles action at No. 1, Autumn Cutright lost an 8-0 decision to Bridgeport’s Virginia Noone and at No. 2, Alexa Davis fell to University’s Emma Rusiecki, 8-1.

“Autumn fought hard like she has all season, but Noone was the better player,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “I can’t say enough about Autumn’s leadership and heart on the court this season. Going from an 8 or 9 seed last year to the 1 seed is a lot to ask of her but she was a fighter all year and ended up winning a few matches and being a leader to the underclassmen. Alexa played a decent match and did a great job getting her serves in and competing for every point but Rusiecki was too good. Alexa will be our only returning senior next year so I am looking forward to good things from her in the future!”

At No. 3, Madelyn Frye dropped an 8-0 decision to Wheeling Park’s Towne Moores and at No. 4 Malia Bowers lost an 8-1 verdict to Elli Hart of Bridgeport.

“Madelyn played fairly well but Moores had more consistency and better shots,” stated Rock. “To my knowledge Madelyn had never picked up a racket before the first day of practice this year and to compete as varsity as a 3 seed takes a lot of guts. She’s a fighter and I look forward to seeing how she improves in the years to come. Malia played well but Hart was the better player. If Malia, like the rest of the underclassmen girls, works in the offseason, she has a lot of potential to be a good player.”

In doubles action, the No. 1 duo of Cutright and Davis lost 8-0 to Marritt Delk and Moores of Wheeling Park, the No. 2 paring of Frye and Bowers lost to Rachel Simon and Rhianna Christmas of Wheeling Park by an 8-1 score and Lainey Rowan and Tori Adams at No. 3 lost an 8-1 decision to Morgantown’s Amber Li and Sophia Macari.

“I’m really excited about Lainey and Tori in the future,” concluded Rock. “They both have so much potential and have already gotten way better throughout the season. Lainey and Tori are both freshmen, so I look forward to another three great years from these two!”
