ELKINS – The Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Buccaneers won a 6-1 decision over Elkins on the road at Davis & Elkins College this past Monday.
The win improved the Bucs of head coach Jason Rock to 10-3 on the season.
Aden Pitts defeated Austin Elliot at No. 1, 8-4, Caden Andrick beat Aaron Elliot at No. 2, 8-0, and Mauricio Menendez defeated Caleb Schoonover at No. 4, 8-0.
Hank Phillips lost a hard-fought 8-6 decision to Anson Sims at No. 3.
“Hank played his toughest opponent by far of the season and fought really hard but came up short,” noted Rock. “It was a great match and awesome to see him leave it all on the court despite the loss.
Pitts and Menendez defeated Austin Elliot and Anson Sims at No. 1 doubles in a lengthy match, 9-8 (7-5), while Andrick and Phillips beat Aaron Elliot and Austin Harris at No. 2 doubles, 8-2, and Garrett Materne and Bailey Cleavenger won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
“Aden and Mauricio played a great match at No. 1 doubles and pulled off the win in the tiebreaker,” noted Rock.
The Bucs were slated to compete in the Big 10 Conference Tournament this past Thursday and Friday.
They will be back on the courts Monday hosting University and Wheeling Park on Tuesday.
