RACHEL – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer tennis team opened their season with a pair of victories this week on the road.
They went to Lincoln on Monday and came away with a 7-0 win and then visited North Marion on Thursday and blanked the Huskies by another 7-0 score.
No. 1 Aden Pitts, No. 2 Caden Andrick, No. 3 Hank Phillips and No. 4 Mauricio Menendez all went a perfect 2-0 during the week.
Pitts and Menendez teamed at No. 1 doubles to go 2-0 as did the duo of Andrick and Phillips at No. 2 and Garrett Materne and Bailey Clevenger at No. 3.
“The boys have played against each other for so long in the preseason that it took them a few games to get used to figuring out their opponents’ styles in the opener with Lincoln,” said first-year head coach Jason Rock. “Nerves and inexperience with “real matches” were evident but overall, it was a good first match for us. Against North Marion, the boys did well and ultimately proved that they were the better team.”
The Bucs, now 2-0, will return to the courts Monday hosting Grafton.
