Tennis Bucs hike record to 6-2 with wins over Bees, Eagles and Mountaineers

TENNERTON – Following a tough weekend against University and Morgantown, the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer tennis team put together a three-game winning streak this week.

The Bucs played three consecutive days, beating East Fairmont at home by a 6-1 score, going on the road and downing Robert C. Byrd by a 6-1 count on Tuesday and then making a return trip to Clarksburg and blanking Liberty by a 7-0 score.

Against East Fairmont, Aden Pitts at No. 1, Caden Andrick at No. 2, Hank Phillips at No. 3 and Mauricio Menendez at No. 4 swept singles play.

In doubles action Andrick and Phillips at No. 2 defeated Atticus Reese and Sebastian Heston by an 8-1 score and Garrett Materne and Bailey Cleavenger at No. 3 won by forfeit.

“Our No. 1 doubles team of Pitt and Menendez struggled to find their groove today but our No. 2 team of Andrick and Phillips played well,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “All four played very well in singles action.”

The Bucs again swept singles action against Robert C. Byrd with Pitts, Andrick, Phillips and Menendez all winning.

Pitts and Menendez and Andrick and Phillips earned doubles wins for the Bucs.

“The heat got to us a little bit against Robert C. Byrd,” noted Rock. “We played bundled up in sweats not even a week ago, so playing in the 80s and sunny was an adjustment. We looked sluggish at first and it took some of us a few games to get going. Aden and Mauricio got out of their ‘funk’ in doubles which was good to see.”

Liberty only had two players on their team, so the Bucs picked up four forfeits.

Winning on the court were Pitts at No. 1 and Phillips at No. 3 and the duo of Pitts and Menendez at No. 1.

The three wins lifted the Bucs to 6-2 on the season heading into Friday’s home match with Bridgeport.

They will return to the courts Monday at Philip Barbour and will stay on the road Tuesday for a rematch with Bridgeport.
