MORGANTOWN – Following a 3-0 start to the season, the Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Buccaneers suffered their first losses of the year on a trip to Morgantown on Saturday.
Playing a pair of traditional tennis powerhouses in regional action, the Bucs dropped a 6-1 verdict to Morgantown in their opener then lost a 7-0 decision later that day to University at Marilla Park.
The lone win of the day for the Bucs came at No. 3 singles against Morgantown where Hank Phillips defeated Adien Aggarual, 8-5.
“Although the score sheet looks rough, I am really happy with how the kids competed,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “The first few matches, some of the kids were in shock because we haven’t seen that level of tennis yet this season. It took some players a few games or even a few matches to adjust. Frankly, the boy’s team hasn’t had too much of a challenge yet this season, but they played really well against some of the best talent in the region. I was really impressed with Hank and Caden as they always compete for every point.”
The Bucs were slated for a busy a week as they were scheduled to take on East Fairmont Monday, Robert C. Byrd on Tuesday and Liberty on Wednesday.
They will return to action Friday hosting Bridgeport.
