TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur boys tennis team picked up home wins recently defeating Lewis County last Thursday by a 6-1 score and then beating John Marshall on Saturday by that same 6-1 score.
The two wins lifted their record to 9-3 overall.
Against Lewis County, they swept singles play with Aden Pitts at No. 1, Caden Andrick at No. 2, Hank Phillips at No. 3 and Mauricio Menendez at No. 4 all getting easy wins.
Pitts and Menendez won at No. 1 doubles while Andrick and Phillips won at forfeit at No. 2 doubles.
Garrett Materne and Bailey Cleavenger lost a close 9-7 match at No. 3 doubles for the Bucs.
“The boys were really close to a 7-0 sweep and they all played well,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “If our boys have confidence in their shots, can cover the court, and communicate/move well in doubles, I think they can compete with almost anyone.”
The same foursome swept John Marshall in singles action as well with the same two doubles teams picking up wins as well against the Monarchs.
“The boys had their strongest performance against a regional opponent so far this year,” noted Rock.
The Bucs were slated to visit Elkins on Monday. They will compete in the Big 10 Tournament starting this Thursday.
