Tennis Bobcats fall to Charleston in first round of NCAA Tourney

CHARLESTON— The West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis team was in action last Saturday in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The fourth-seeded Bobcats took on the No. 1 seed Charleston in the opening round. The Golden Eagles defeated the 'Cats 4-1 to conclude the 2021 season.

Charleston started the match by taking the doubles point after winning at No. 1 and No. 2.

The Bobcats started singles play with first set victories on five of the six courts.

Charleston took a 2-0 lead after a straight-set victory at No. 5.

Taylor Papworth would chip away at the lead with a convincing victory at No. 2. Papworth dominated the match from start to finish, winning (6-0, 6-2) and making the score 2-1.

The Bobcats could not muster up another point as UC would collect wins at No. 6 and No. 3 to round out the scoring.

West Virginia Wesleyan finished the 2021 season with a record of 7-6.
