Sam Squires took home a runner-up and a fourth-place finish to help the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers to a fifth-place finish at the Big 10 Conference Swimming Championships this past Saturday at Fairmont State. The five-man B-U team amassed 67 points.

FAIRMONT – With just five swimmers competing, the Buckhannon-Upshur swim Buccaneers still placed fifth in the 10-team Big 10 Conference Championships held Saturday at Fairmont State College.

The Bucs compiled 67 points placing in the top eight in seven events.

Bridgeport won the conference championship with 311 points while Elkins was a distant second with 140.

Robert C. Byrd was third with 123 and Fairmont Senior was fourth with 88.

With Will Sparks out with the flu, the limited Buc roster made the most of their opportunities.

“The boys’ team finished fifth which is extremely impressive for our five-man team,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Will Squires.”

Sam Squires led the Bucs with a second and fourth-place finishes.

Squires took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.81) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.93).

Garrett Butler and Drew Griffith recorded a pair of seventh-place finishes.

Butler in the 200-yard freestyle (2.16.68) and Griffith in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.32).

“Garrett Butler had a great 200 free dropping two seconds from his personal best time,” noted Squires. “He has been consistently practicing hard and performing well this season and you can absolutely see that in his times during meets.”

Dane Ammons had the other top eight finish placing eighth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.34).

Both relay units placed in the top five.

Butler, Ammons, Squires and Griffith took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.59) and fifth in the 200-yard medley (2:02.14).

“We had some great results in our relays, again with a small team every relay counts,” Squires stated. “We have been lucky that our relays provide some good competition against the bigger schools and allow us to score well at these big invitationals.”

The Bucs will now rest up and host regionals Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

“We are very excited for this weekend's regional competition,” concluded Squires. “We look for even more improvement as we hope to end our season with a great regional meet and hopefully taking a good few to the state meet.”
