Taste the arts this Saturday


BUCKHANNON — The Upshur Arts Alliance, a long-standing organization in the community devoted to the arts is bringing back its auction fundraiser after a 20-year absence.

The fundraiser dubbed Taste of the Arts happens Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Mountain View Event Center, 3 Billingsley Drive, Buckhannon. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the affair which will  include live and silent auctions, hors d’oeuvres, drinks, entertainment and more. Tickets are $25 per adult. A cash bar will also be available.

The proceeds from the event will benefit the Upshur Arts Alliance who will use it to promote the arts in Upshur County, something UAA has been doing for 35 years.

Elizabeth Spencer, vice president of UAA and event chair, said there will performances from the Augusta Youth Ballet Company under the direction of Nina Scatteregia, the Buckhannon Chamber Orchestra, Key to Adam and Buckhannon Community Theatre.

Although the UAA members in the spotlight during the event will be dressed up in gowns sponsored by The Crowning Touch and tuxes sponsored by Goody’s. The event itself is not formal.

The silent auction includes items donated by area artists and businesses including pottery from Brian VanNostrand, paintings by Sara Golden, David Carson and Doris Bright, soaps from Hall Road Soaps, books from local authors and even a unique chainsaw sculpture entitled “Miners Gotta Eat.”

There will also be basket raffles, 50/50 drawings, desserts and other activities.

The Taste of the Arts adds to the fundraising the UAA has already been doing. Secretary Sandra Presar, who was one of the founding members, reminded the public to watch for the upcoming tree and wreath fundraiser to be held in the Chamber and Visitor Center in November and also the third annual Upshur County Adult Spelling Bee slated for Jan. 26, 2018.
