Preston Bennett of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer swim team claimed two first places in their home meet, the Splash Williams Invitational, this past Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan. BUCKHANNON – You break a record as a freshman in your first high school meet. So, what do you do for an encore?

Break that record again in your second meet of the season.

That is exactly what Preston Bennett did for the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers in their home swim meet, the Splash Williams Invitational, this past Saturday at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

In their opening meet in Huntington last week, Bennett shattered an eight year-old mark in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.19.

On Saturday, he broke his own record shaving 0.07 seconds off the time as he won the event with a clocking of 2:12.12.

Bennett also claimed the other Buckhannon-Upshur victory taking the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:18.64.

Sam Squires swam to a pair of runner-up finishes for the Bucs.

He took second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.23 and 100-yard backstroke with a clocking of 1:10.01.

Dane Ammons and Garrett Butler had top-five finishes.

Ammons took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:13.07 and Butler claimed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:24.22.

Ammons also placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle.

The 200-yard medley relay foursome of Ammons, Squires, Bennett and Butler claimed third with a time of 2:01.02 while the 200-yard freestyle relay quartet of Rhett Ammons, Reis Leonard, Owen Caynor and Garrett Butler placed sixth with a time of 2:01.81.

The Bucs finished fifth in the team standings with 127 points.

Bridgeport won the team title with 272 points while Parkersburg was second with 220.

Morgantown checked in third with 217 points while Elkins was fourth in the 12-team event with 171 points.

“Overall it was a great meet,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head swim coach Will Squires. “We had a lot of great swims even after a challenging week of practices. We've been trying to really focus on getting into shape the last two weeks so many swimmers were a little off their best times, but in comparison to this point last season, we are looking much stronger.”

The Bucs will be off until Saturday, Dec. 7 when they compete in the MoHawk Invitational at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center.

“We are excited to be able to swim at the new Mylan Park Aquatic Center in a couple of weeks and will be looking forward to getting a taste of the state meet's new home,” concluded Squires.
