BUCKHANNON — It’s finally that time of year again for the highly anticipated 78th annual West Virginia Strawberry Festival. This year’s theme is “Strawberry Roads Take Me Home”. While the festival doesn’t officially begin until next week, there are many festival related activities happening this weekend to kick things off that you won’t want to miss.
The official Strawberry Festival Gift Shop is now open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in the brick building on the corner of Main and Spring Streets. Be sure to stop by and pick up an official festival t-shirt and your favorite strawberry products.
Strawberry Friday Night at the Park will be held at Jawbone Park 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. on May 10. The Preserves Bluegrass Band and Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School’s Jazz Band are scheduled to perform. There will also be various vendors and food options available.
Saturday, May 11 will be chock-full of festival events, with food and music beginning at 10 a.m. The Animal Outreach Project will host their annual Pets On Parade pet show at 11 a.m. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and there is a $5 entry fee per class.
A Strawberry Festival favorite, the 2.5 mile Horse and Carriage Parade will begin at 3 p.m. This year is slated to have a record number of participants with various other equestrian related activities throughout the afternoon.
There will be a free live concert by Cody Clayton Eagle and his band on Saturday evening from 5 – 7 p.m. on North Spring Street after the Horse and Carriage Parade. Cody is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter from Morgantown who received a Gold Ticket to California for his American Idol performance. There will be food available and the Beer Garden down the street will be open as well.
The annual Miniature Horse Show will take place at the Bennett Farm at 10 a.m. and the infamous Draft Horse Pull will be held at 1 p.m.
The WV Strawberry Festival will hold their first BackYard BBQ Cook-off on Sunday, May 12 beginning at 11 a.m. Cody Clayton Eagle and his band will return after the BBQ contest to perform for another free concert from 6 – 8 p.m. on North Spring Street.
Buckhannon-Upshur High School will perform their annual Strawberry Concert at West Virginia Wesleyan College Chapel Monday evening at 7 p.m.
Gambill Amusement will open the carnival on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
