Strader’s 17 rebounds leads Bucs past Elkins Tigers in 50-35 win

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Josh Loudin (24) soars in front of Elkins’ Trevor Chenoweth (5) and prepares to slam down a dunk in front of the B-U student body section during the third quarter of their contest Monday night at the high school. Loudin had eight points and five rebounds as the Bucs defeated the Tigers, 50-35.

TENNERTON – Shaking off a disappointing loss to Fairmont Senior, the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers took care of business against the Elkins Tigers Monday night in a Big 10 Conference clash at the high school gym.

The Bucs never trailed in the contest winning it by a 50-35 score.

“We are still trying to learn how to win,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster. “I felt that Fairmont Senior loss was on me. With Elkins being a rival, getting the win was big because we needed to bounce back from that Fairmont Senior game. I think we felt we were better than Fairmont Senior and we felt we were better than Elkins going into the game tonight. There are no easy games for us. We are still trying to learn how to win. Now we feel we have the talent to win, its on us as coaches to pull that out of the team.”

The Bucs were spearheaded by the effort of senior Ryan Strader who hauled down 17 points to go along with five points.

“Strader plays like a senior,” stated Foster. “When he plays like that, he makes everyone else better. We can really shut people down when he is playing like that.”

Harrison Walker started the game with a three-pointer and Will McCauley added a baseline jumper to stake the Bucs to an early 5-0 lead.

Elkins closed it to 11-9 with a 9-6 run, but Strader put in a rebound, Lamar Hurst unleashed a three-pointer and Strader put in a free throw to extend the B-U lead to 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a futility in offensive basketball as the two teams combined for just nine points.

Lamar Hurst had all three points for the Bucs, all at the free throw line.

The Bucs still led at the break by five, at 20-15.

Buckhannon-Upshur got the offense going in the third quarter with a 23-point output.

Elkins closed it to a 22-19 contest, but McCauley scored in the paint and Ryan Hurst uncorked a trey as that pushed the lead out to eight, at 27-19.

Elkins cut their deficit down to six, at 32-26, but Josh Loudin put in a rebound and Ryan Hurst scored on a lay-up to put the B-U lead back to 10, at 36-26, with 3:11 left in the third quarter.

Following a three-pointer by Elkins’ Peyton Isner that made it 36-29, Loudin scored on a rebound then slammed one down bringing the crowd to their feet and pushing the B-U lead up to 11 at 40-29, with 1:38 left in the canto.

Lamar Hurst hit a long distance three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer giving the Bucs a 43-30 lead.

The Bucs ran some clock in the fourth quarter shortening the game with a double-digit lead.

McCauley started the final quarter with a free throw and Loudin made a lay-up to give the Bucs their biggest lead of the game, 16 points, at 46-30.

Elkins narrowed it to 13, at 48-35, with 1:13 left but the Bucs ended the game with a pair of free throws by Ryan Hurst.

Ryan Hurst led the Bucs with 15 points while Lamar Hurst added 12.

Dre Owens paced the Elkins’ offense with 11 points.

Elkins dropped to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Bucs improved to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big 10 Conference.

Buckhannon-Upshur was slated to host East Fairmont Wednesday night.
