State swim meet underway in Morgantown

Lady Bucs have three individuals, two relay teams advance to today’s finals

MORGANTOWN — The Buckhannon-Upshur girls swim team had three individuals and two relay teams advance to the finals of the state meet after Thursday’s qualifying round at the WVU Natatorium.

The girls’ finals were set to get underway this morning. The boys’ qualifying action took place later on Thursday.

Junior Madi Shepherd, senior Brooke Newcome and sophomore Jennifer Williams all earned spots in today’s finals for the Lady Bucs.

Shepherd, also the alternate in the 100 backstroke, placed fifth in the 100 freestyle in a time of 56.77, Newcome was eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.23) and Williams placed 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.50).

In the relays, B-U’s foursome of Newcome, Shepherd and seniors Kaitlyn Bosley and Ivy Ward qualified for the finals in both the 400 freestyle and 200 medley.

They placed sixth in the 400 freestyle in a time of 4:04.83 and 11th in the 200 medley (2:07.03).

Other Lady Buc swimmers that took part in Thursday’s qualifing rounds were Williams in the 200 IM (17th, 2:37.76), Ward in the 100 backstroke (21st, 1:13.34), sophomore Merrody Malone in the 100 butterfly (22nd, 1:13.73) and 200 IM (22nd, 2:44.37), Bosley in the 500 freestyle (24th, 6:21.06) and 200 freestyle (17th, 2:17.52) and junior Emma Reger in  the 200 freestyle (24th, 2:27.78).

Buccaneer boys that were scheduled to take to the pool in Thursday’s qualifying action were freshman Sam Squires and sophomore Florian Cramer in individual events.

Squires was a qualifier in the 50 freestyle and Cramer in the 500 freestyle.

Squire, Cramer, junior Drew Griffith and sophomore Will Sparks were also qualifiers in 200 medley relay.

Sophomore Dane Ammons is the boys’ alternate.
