Softball Lady ‘Cats take two from Wheeling Jesuit in MEC doubleheader


BUCKHANNION – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team picked up two key Mountain East Conference victories here Tuesday in a home doubleheader at Culpepper Field against Wheeling Jesuit.

The Lady ‘Cats took game one by an 8-3 score and won the second outing by a 7-2 score.

The two wins left the Lady ‘Cats with a 16-18 record overall and a 9-11 MEC record.

They are now just two games out of a play-off spot in the MEC tournament which begins in two weeks.

In game one, Wesleyan never trailed as they took a 6-0 lead after three innings of play.

In the top of the second, Kelley Bourne doubled home Megan Magsamen and later scored on an error and Lauryn King singled home Kennedy Cowart to give Wesleyan a 3-0 lead.

Wesleyan scored three more in the bottom of the third when Bourne singled home Ciana Bowen and Cowart doubled home Bourne and Bowen.

Wheeling Jesuit made it a 6-3 contest with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Lauryn King blasted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to give Wesleyan some breathing room.

Wesleyan outhit Wheeling Jesuit by a 10-7 margin.

Cowart had three hits for Wesleyan while King and Bourne each had two apiece.

Hannah Hudson improved her mark to 9-8 with a complete-game win.

She doled out seven hits and walked one while striking out six.

In the second outing, Wheeling Jesuit took a 2-0 lead after three innings of play.

Wesleyan took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Celia Valencia hit a one-run single and later scored along with Bourne on a Wheeling Jesuit error.

Wesleyan broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs.

King hit a two-run double and Destiny Alvarado crushed a three-run home run.

Wesleyan collected 11 hits in the win.

King had three while Cowart and Miranda Frye each had two.

Bourne upped her record to 2-1 with a complete-game effort.

She allowed just two earned runs on five hits, didn’t walk a batter and fanned two.

The pair of losses dropped Wheeling Jesuit to 7-33 overall and 4-18 in the MEC.

Wesleyan was slated to play a conference doubleheader with West Virginia State on Thursday.

They will return to action Monday when they visit Charleston for a MEC twin bill starting at 4 p.m.
