Softball Lady ‘Cats stay red hot in Florida picking up four more wins

WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats continue to play winning softball in Florida during their annual spring break tour.

WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats continue to play winning softball in Florida during their annual spring break tour.

The Lady Bobcats played four games over Monday and Tuesday and came away with four wins.

It took extra innings in two of the four games, but Wesleyan is currently 7-1 in Florida and own a 10-2 record overall.

On Monday, they defeated Gannon in extra innings by a 6-5 score and dominated Mercyhurst in a 10-0 win.

On Tuesday, the defeated Clarion by a 12-4 score and came back to down Holy Family University by a 9-3 score.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third against Gannon, Brooke Clark doubled home Molly Osbourne to even the game at 1-1.

Gannon scored two in the bottom of the third but Wesleyan answered that with two of their own in the top of the fourth when Kelley Bourne hit a two-run single making it a 3-3 contest.

Gannon scored two more in the fourth for a 5-3 lead.

A one-run single by Kiley Turner in the top of the sixth made it a 5-4 contest and a Grace Smith one-run double tied it at 5-5 in the top of the seventh.

Wesleyan won the game with a run in the top of the eighth when Turner hit a sacrifice fly scoring Destiny Alvarado.

Both team had eight hits.

Smith led the Wesleyan offense with two hits.

Hannah Hudson (3-1) tossed a complete game to earn the win.

She allowed five earned runs on eight hits while striking out two.

It was all Wesleyan in their contest with Mercyhurst as the game was highlighted by a grand slam home run by Lady Bobcat Shelby Kennedy.

Smith staked them to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a one-run single.

Alli Robinson, Kennedy Cowart, and Smith each knocked in a run for Wesleyan in the bottom of the third making it a 4-0 contest.

Osbourne made it a 5-0 game in the bottom of the fifth as she single home Paije Bragg.

Bella Posey hit a one-run double in the bottom of the sixth and Kennedy wrapped up the scoring with her grand slam.

Wesleyan collected 15 hits in the game with Smith leading the way with three.

Abagail O’Shields improved to 2-0 with a complete-game victory.

She gave up six hits and struck out 10.

In Tuesday’s game, Clarion struck first with two runs in the top of the first but Wesleyan countered five runs in the bottom half of the inning with the stanza being highlighted by a two-run home by Robinson.

Clarion scored another run in the top of the second making it a 5-3 contest.

A three-run home run by Osbourn in the bottom of the third staked Wesleyan to an 8-3 lead.

Clarion tacked on one more run in the top of the fourth but Wesleyan scored twice in their half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Alvarado and a one-run single from Lauryn King to up their lead to 10-4.

Smith had a one-run single in the bottom of the fifth and Turner hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the mercy rule.

Wesleyan collected 15 hits in the game with Smith getting three.

In Tuesday’s nightcap, Holy Family took a 2-0 advantage after three innings of play but Wesleyan tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fourth behind a one-run double by Bourne and a sacrifice fly from Clark.

A King home run gave Wesleyan a 3-2 in the top of the seventh but they couldn’t hold it as Holy Family scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh forcing extra innings.

Wesleyan made quick work of Holy Family in the extra frame with six runs with Robinson hitting a two-run home run, King hitting a one-run single and Turner blasting a three-run home run.

Wesleyan outhit Holy Family by a 12-6 margin.

Robinson had three of the 12 hits for Wesleyan.

Ciana Bowen improved her record to 4-1 as she went the distance.

He gave up three earned runs on six hits while fanning six.
