Softball Lady ‘Cats split with Mercy, Assumption

CLERMONT (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team split a pair of games on their final day in Florida last Wednesday against Mercy College and Assumption College.

The Lady Bobcats earned an 8-5 victory over Mercy that morning and then played again right after the conclusion of that game against Assumption, dropping a 12-2 decision in five innings.

The split left head coach Steve Warner’s team with a 5-7 record.

In Wednesday’s opener, Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Ylannah Bowman.

Wesleyan tied the game in the top of the second when Megan Magsamen hit a one-run single and later scored on a ground out by Lauren Nigli.

Wesleyan took their first lead in the top of the third when Magsamen singled home Kennedy Cowart to make it a 3-2 game.

Wesleyan extended their lead to 6-2 with a three-run third inning.

They took advantage of a fielder’s choice by Magsamen that scored Cowart and a Mercy error on a ball hit by Miranda Frye to left field allowed Kiley Turner and Destiny Alvarado to score.

A Turner two-run single in the top of the sixth pushed the Wesleyan lead to 8-2.

Mercy chased across three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but Wesleyan starting pitcher Hannah Hudson forced Casey Akers to fly to center field for the final out, stranding runners at second and third base.

Wesleyan blasted out 13 hits with Turner leading the way with three while Brooke Clark, Cowart and Magsamen each had two apiece.

Huston improved to 2-2 on the season with a complete-game performance.

She gave up five earned runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out seven.

In the second game with Assumption, Wesleyan fell behind by a 7-0 score after two innings of play.

Assumption scored one more in the top of the fourth and four more in the top of the fifth for a 12-0 lead.

Wesleyan avoided the shutout in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of one-run singles by Alvarado and Miranda Frye.

The game was ended on the mercy rule after the fifth.

Wesleyan collected five hits with Clark, Cowart, Magsamen, Alvarado and Frye each getting one.

Haylee Shires (1-3) started the game for Wesleyan and went just one inning giving up seven earned runs on eight hits.

Kayla Peabody and Olivia Crowley each had three hits to lead Assumption.

Wesleyan’s five-game schedule to Salem, Va. to wrap up their spring break trip this past weekend was wiped out by the weather.

The Lady ‘Cats will now turn their attention to Mountain East Conference play as they begin conference action Saturday when they host Shepherd in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.

They will remain at home Sunday and face Fairmont State in a league twin bill at 1 p.m.
