Softball Lady ‘Cats pick up three wins to begin Florida spring break tour


WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team picked up three more wins as they began their spring break tour of Florida on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lady Bobcats cruised past University of the Sciences Devils by a 9-3 score and then defeated Concordia (NY) College by a 4-2 score on Saturday.

Wesleyan then split a pair of games on Sunday as they beat Felician by a 6-5 score in extra innings but dropped a 2-1 decision to Seton Hill.

It was the top of the line-up that got it done for Wesleyan in their game against University of the Sciences.

One through three hitters Brooke Clark, Alli Robinson and Kennedy Cowart combined to go 10-for-12 with seven RBIs.

The Devils scored first in the top of the first when Lauren Davis doubled home Lauren DelGuidice for an unearned run.

Wesleyan quickly countered with three runs in the bottom of the first.

Clark started the inning with a solo home run, Robinson scored on a passed ball and Cowart scored on a single by Lauryn King.

Wesleyan added two more in the bottom of the second when Cowart hit a two-run double scoring Robinson and Lauren Niglio.

That staked Wesleyan to a 5-1 lead.

The Devils plated two runs in the top of the third to cut into the Wesleyan lead by a 5-3 score.

Wesleyan tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Robinson and put the game away with two more in the bottom of the fifth getting runs-batted-in from Robinson and Cowart.

Wesleyan starter Ciana Bowen closed the door on the Devils the rest of the way.

Robinson had four hits to lead the Wesleyan 15-hit attack while Clark and Cowart each had three hits.

Bowen improved to 2-1 as she pitched a complete game.

She gave up two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four.

Gabrielle Simms led the Devils with two hits.

Megan Master suffered the loss for the Devils in a complete-game effort.

She allowed eight earned runs on 15 hits.

The Devils dropped to 0-7 with the loss.

Wesleyan built up a 4-0 lead against Concordia.

Kelley Bourne knocked in a run in the top of the second, Cowart hit a one-run single in the top of the third and a one-run double in the top of the fifth and Grace Smith hit a one-run single in the top of the fifth.

Concordia scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

Clark, Cowart and Smith each had two hits for Wesleyan.

Abigail O’Shields (1-1) went the distance as she gave up just one earned run on two hits while fanning nine.

Wesleyan fell behind by a 3-0 score against Felician before they got it going midway through the game.

Wesleyan finally got on the board in the top of the fourth when Destiny Alvarado hit a two-run double making it a 3-2 contest.

Felician added another run on a solo home run by Nicole Spiegelberg in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 4-2.

Kelley Bourne hit a sacrifice fly that scored Alvarado in the top of the sixth and they tied the game in the top of the seventh when Kiley Turner singled home Kaitlyn Rizor forcing extra innings.

Wesleyan chased across two runs in the top of the eighth behind a one-run single by Clark and a one-run double from Robinson.

Felician scored a run in the bottom of the eighth but they couldn’t get the tying run across.

Clark led the 12-hit Wesleyan attack with three hits.

Ciana Bowen (3-1) earned the win going seven innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits.

Hannah Hudson earned the save tossing the eighth inning.

In the final contest on Sunday with Seton Hill, the Griffins scored twice in the top of the fourth.

Wesleyan’s lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Arianna Smoot scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Kiley Turner.

Wesleyan outhit Seton Hill by a 6-5 margin.

Clark, Robinson, Cowart, Smith, Alvarado and Bourne each had a hit for Wesleyan.

Hudson suffered the loss for Wesleyan going the distance.

She gave up just one earned run on five hits.

The Lady Bobcats, 6-2, were slated to play Gannon and Mercyhurst on Monday.

They will return to action today playing Clarion and Holy Family University.
