Softball Lady ‘Cats lose doubleheader to Charleston on a pair of walks-offs


CHARLESTON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats lost a pair of heartbreakers to the Charleston Lady Golden Eagles in a doubleheader Monday evening in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.

The Lady Bobcats lost both games on walk-offs as the Lady Golden Eagles earned a pair of 4-3 wins in both games.

The losses eliminated Wesleyan from any chance of making the MEC Tournament which begins on May 3 in Salem, Va.

In game one, Wesleyan built a 3-0 lead.

They scored twice in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Miranda Frye and added another run in the top of the fifth on a one-run single by Brooke Clarke.

Charleston tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with three runs.

They won it in the bottom of the seventh when Karli Pinkerton singled home Destinee Miles for an unearned run.

Both teams had seven hits with Kennedy Cowart leading the Wesleyan offense with two.

In the second contest, Lauryn King staked Wesleyan to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when she singled home Cowart.

A pair of Wesleyan errors opened the door for a three-run fourth inning for Charleston as they took a 3-1 lead.

Celia Valencia scored from third base on a throwing error on a stolen base by Cowart to trim the Charleston lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning.

Wesleyan deadlocked the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning when Ciana Bowen singled home Kelley Bourne.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Miles hit an infield single then came all the way around to score on a Wesleyan error for the win.

All four of Charleston’s runs were unearned.

Wesleyan outhit Charleston by an 8-6 margin.

Cowart and Destiny Alvarado each had two hits for Wesleyan.

Bourne suffered the tough defeat in a complete-game effort.

She didn’t allow an earned run on six hits while fanning one.

The pair of losses dropped Wesleyan to 16-22 overall and 9-15 in the MEC.

Charleston improved to 30-17 overall and 19-9 in the conference.

Wesleyan will return to action Friday when they host UVa.-Wise for a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. and then they will conclude their season Saturday hosting Concord for a league twin bill staring at 1 p.m.
