Softball Lady ‘Cats hit rough patch in Florida


WINTER HAVEN (Fla.) – Following a hot start on their spring break trip to Florida, the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats ran into a speed bump on Thursday and Friday and they lost four straight games.

They opened Thursday with a 2-1 loss to University of Missouri-St. Louis and ended the day with a 6-1 setback to the University of Mary.

On Friday, the Lady Bobcats dropped a 2-0 verdict to Rockhurst and a 4-3 extra innings decision to Findlay.

The four losses left Wesleyan with a 10-6 record.

They will wrap up their Florida games with a pair of contests today playing Bentley University and Stonehill College.

Missouri-St. Louis scored a pair of runs on a two-run double by Ali Schoon in Thursday’s outing.

Wesleyan scored their lone run in the top of the seventh when Brooke Clark scored on a passed ball to make it a 2-1 contest, but Wesleyan left runners on the corners as the game ended.

Wesleyan outhit Missouri-St. Louis by a 5-3 margin.

Grace Smith led the Lady Bobcat offense with two hits.

Abigail O’Shields suffered the loss in a complete game effort.

She allowed just one earned run on three hits while fanning eight.

The University of Mary, they took a 6-0 lead after three innings of action in the nightcap.

Wesleyan’s lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Lauren Niglio singled home Smith.

Wesleyan mustered just four hits in the contest with Alli Robinson, Smith, Niglio and Kiley Turner each getting one.

In Friday’s battle with Rockhurst, the game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs by Rockhurst.

Wesleyan managed just two hits in the shutout loss with Robinson and Molly Osboure collecting them.

Ciana Bowen pitched well but suffered the loss.

She went the distance and gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four.

In the final game Friday against Findlay, Wesleyan was down by a 1-0 score before chasing across three runs in the top of the seventh with Robinson, Clark and Kennedy Cowart each knocking in a run.

Wesleyan couldn’t hold the lead as Findlay scored twice.

Findlay won the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth when Lyndsey Seamon singled home Megan Fisher.

Both teams had seven hits.

Robinson led the offense with three hits.

Hudson (4-3) absorbed the loss.

She went the distance giving up three earned runs on seven hits.
