Softball Lady ‘Cats drop a league doubleheader to West Liberty

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team dropped a Mountain East Conference home doubleheader against the West Liberty Hilltoppers Saturday afternoon at Culpepper Field.

The Lady ‘Cats dropped the first game by a 3-2 score and then lost game two by a 5-2 count.

The two losses left Wesleyan with a 14-18 overall record and a 7-11 MEC record.

In the first contest, Kennedy Cowart blasted a two-run home run that scored Destiny Alvarado in the bottom of the first to give the Lady ‘Cats a 2-0 run lead.

It was the only inning Wesleyan scored.

West Liberty’s Katie Beeman hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to make it a 2-1 contest.

Kat Donzella hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to give West Liberty a 3-2 lead, and that score remained at the end of the game.

West Virginia Wesleyan was outhit by an 8-3 margin and had as many errors as hits.

Alvarado had two of Wesleyan’s three hits while Cowart had the other.

Hannah Hudson (8-8) suffered the loss in a complete-game effort.

She allowed three earned runs on eight hits while striking out five.

In game two, West Liberty used a three-run home run from Beeman in the top of the first and a two-run home run from Haley Collett in the top of the second for a 5-0 lead advantage.

Wesleyan scored a run in the bottom of the second when Lauryn King scored on an error to make it a 5-1 game.

Wesleyan’s second run came in the bottom of the fifth when Cowart singled home Brooke Clark to close the game to 5-2.

Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer than three runs.

Wesleyan had six hits with Clark and Cowart getting two each.

Haylee Shires (5-8) suffered the setback going just 1 1/3 innings.

She gave up five runs on three hits while walking two.

The Lady ‘Cats were scheduled for a make-up double header with Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday.

They will return to action Friday when they visit West Virginia State for a league doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
