Rohr throws a three-inning no-hitter in high school debut

FAIRMONT — Everything came up roses for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs softball team in their home opener here Thursday against the Braxton County Eagles in a 10-0 three inning victory.

It was a touch of the old and the new for B-U fans as senior Alli Robinson hit a home run and freshman pitcher Alyssa Rohr threw a no-hitter in the shortened game.

The victory was a nice rebound for the Lady Bucs who opened their season a day earlier at Fairmont Senior and lost an 8-7 decision in extra innings.

“We played with a lot of heart in both games,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender. “The team showed a lot of grit and determination in both games when faced with adversity. We just fell a little short against Fairmont Senior. We came back against Braxton County and our bats were on fire. Everything just clicked.”

Everything did indeed click for the Lady Bucs against Braxton as the first four batters of the game reached on a base hit.

Rohr started the inning with an infield single, followed that up with a steal of second and then scored on Shelby McDaniels single to center field.

Robinson drove a pitch over the center field fence scoring courtesy runner Audrey Gaudet to make it a 3-0 contest.

Sydney Fletcher kept the inning going with a single to center then later scored on a misplaced ball by Braxton. Brooklyn Robinson, who hit the fly ball to right field, came around all four bases to score as well to give the Lady Bucs a 5-0 lead.

B-U scored five more in the bottom of the second.

Hailey Thompson hit a one-run single, Brooklyn Robinson smacked a two-run single, Ciara Melton stroked a one-run single and the Lady Bucs capitalized on an error for their fifth run of the inning.

That gave the Bucs a 10-0 lead.

Braxton loaded the bases in the top of the third with two outs on a B-U error and two walks, but Rohr managed to get Emily Oates to bounce into a fielder’s choice to secure the shutout.

Rohr (1-0) walked three and fanned two.

“It was amazing to see her throw a no-hitter in her very first start at the high school level,” noted Bender. “She showed a lot of composure out there as a freshman.”

B-U collected eight hits in the win with Fletcher getting two.

In Wednesday’s outing, Buckhannon-Upshur struck first in the top of the first when Robinson reached on an error and then later scored on another Fairmont Senior error.

The Lady Polar Bears took their first lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.

B-U tied it at 2-2 in the top of the third when McDaniels drew a one-out walk, stole second, moved to third on a ground ball by Robinson and scored on a passed ball.

Fairmont Senior had their big inning in the bottom of the fourth scoring five runs for a 7-2 lead.

Buckhannon-Upshur answered with a five-run outburst of their own in the top of the sixth.

During the inning, Fletcher had the big hit, a two-out two-run single.

The game went into extra innings where Fairmont Senior won it in the bottom of the eighth with an unearned run.

Buckhannon-Upshur collected nine hits with Fletcher leading the way with two hits and three RBIs.

Ciara Melton suffered the loss in the circle going the distance.

She allowed five earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four.

The Lady Bucs will return to action today when they host Morgantown at 6:30 p.m. and then they will visit Grafton Tuesday for a 5 p.m. outing.
