Softball Lady Bucs go 1-1 in a pair of slugfests


GLEN DALE – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc softball team split a pair of wild games on Saturday in the northern panhandle.

The Lady Bucs lost a 15-7 contest to John Marshall in a game they committed seven errors, but then rebounded to win a slugfest against Williamstown in extra innings, 17-16.

Senior Alli Robinson continued to drive the ball out of the field with three home runs on the day.

“We faced a lot of adversity over the two games with some injuries or long innings, but we kept chipping away,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender. “We just couldn’t keep it from spilling over. Our Williamstown game lasted three hours which is rare for softball. Playing through all this adversity showed who we are – a team with a lot of grit.”

In game one, the Lady Bucs struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first when Robinson hit a two-run that scored Shelby McDaniels.

John Marshall got one back in the bottom of the third but the Lady Bucs answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth when Brooklyn Robinson scored on an error to make it a 3-1 game.

John Marshall chased across seven runs in the bottom of the fourth sending 12 batters to the plate.

They capitalized on four errors in the inning as they took an 8-3 lead.

The Lady Bucs stayed in the game with a four-run fifth inning.

Robinson hit another two-run blast and Ciara Melton had a two-run single to account for the scoring.

That made it an 8-7 game.

The B-U defense couldn’t hold up in the bottom of the fifth as a pair of errors led to another seven-run inning as the game was halted on the mercy rule.

The Lady Bucs collected seven hits in the contest with Robinson leading the way with two.

Alyssa Rohr suffered the loss going three innings. She allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out one.

John Marshall was led by Anna Blake who had two hits and three RBIs.

In the Williamstown game, the Lady Bucs committed seven errors again but was able to pull out the win.

Only six of the 16 Williamstown runs were earned.

B-U took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Sydney Fletcher doubled home Hailey Thompson and Ciara Melton doubled home Alli Robinson and Olivia Caynor.

Williamstown scored five in the bottom of the first but the Lady Bucs tied the game at 5-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the second.

Brooklyn Robinson smacked a two-run single to account for the scoring.

Williamstown took the lead right back with a run in the bottom of the second.

B-U went back on top with a three-run fourth inning a one-run single by Kyndra Spotloe and a two-run double by Brooklyn Robinson.

That made it a 8-6 game.

Williamstown tied the game with two in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead again with a three-run fifth inning for an 11-8 advantage.

The Lady Bucs erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Melton hit a solo home run to get the inning going and then Thompson hit a two-run single, Alli Robinson smacked a one-run single, Spotloe drilled a two-run double for the scoring.

That gave the Lady Bucs a 14-11 lead.

Williamstown scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Buckhannon-Upshur wasted little time in the eighth inning putting up three runs with a three-run blast by Alli Robinson.

Williamstown scored two runs in the bottom of the inning but they Lady Bucs were able to limit to two as they held on for the win.

The Lady Bucs cracked out 21 hits in the win with Thompson leading the way with four while Audrey Gaudet had three.

Melton started the game and then came back into the contest and finished it to earn the win. She pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up just two earned runs on eight hits.

Williamstown belted out 12 hits with Brittney Hooper getting three.

Aiyana Hancock pitched the entire game for Williamstown  and allowed 16 earned runs on 21 hits.

The split left the Lady Bucs with a 3-1 record heading into Tuesday’s game with Preston.

They are scheduled to visit University today at 6:30 p.m. and then visit North Marion in a Big 10 Conference battle Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
