Softball Lady Bucs fall late to UHS, 5-4

TENNERTON – It was perhaps the most disappointing loss of the season for the Buckhannon-Upshur softball Lady Bucs in their home encounter with University Monday evening.

The Lady Bucs led University by a 4-1 score going into the seventh inning but they gave up a grand slam to the Hawks in the seventh and wound up dropping a 5-4 decision.

“We played tough against a great softball team,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender. “Our dugout from the first pitch had great energy and everyone was focused. The girls never quit, and I couldn’t be prouder of each of their efforts.”

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Bucs chased across four runs.

Shelby McDaniels hit a one-run double, Megan Bailey smacked a one-run triple and a University error allowed for two runs as the Lady Bucs took a 4-0 lead.

University got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning on a one-run double by Ally Jansen.

In the top of the seventh, Madison Moon drew a walk and Alyssa Spadafore and Anna Voris each had singles loading the bases for Meysa Heitmann.

Heitmann cleared them with a home run to centerfield giving University a 5-4 lead.

Brooklyn Robinson managed a two-out single for B-U in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Lady Bucs were unable to bring her home.

Buckhannon-Upshur collected seven hits in the loss with Alyssa Rohr and Kennedy Samargo each getting two.

Jansen Kimble (7-5) pitched a complete game for the Lady Bucs allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two.

“McDaniels, as our catcher, and Kimble, called and pitched a great game,” noted Bender. “We had the one tough inning in the seventh, but I like the way Jansen, a freshman, responded to it. She stepped up, refocused, and got three outs to keep us in a position to get back into the game.”

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 7-7 on the season.

They will visit Parkersburg South today with a 5 p.m. start.

Their Saturday outing with Roane County has been canceled.

The Lady Bucs will visit University Monday in a rematch at 5 p.m.
