Softball Lady Bucs earn wins over Grafton and Bridgeport

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur softball team went 2-2 over a four-day stretch last week.

The Lady Bucs beat Grafton at home last Wednesday by a 7-6 score but dropped a 16-6 home decision to unbeaten Lincoln on Thursday.

The Lady Bucs then began play in the Big 10 Conference Tournament on Friday downing Bridgeport by an 11-2 score but was eliminated from the tournament after suffering a 19-9 loss to Liberty on Saturday.

The Lady Bucs were down 2-0 to Grafton before scoring three in the bottom of the second behind a one-run single from Kennedy Samargo and a two-run double from Alyssa Rohr for a 3-2 lead.

Grafton retook the lead with a two-run top of the fourth inning, but Shelby McDaniels knocked home pinch runner McKinley Bonnett tying the contest at 4-4.

The Lady Bucs took back the lead at 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth getting RBIs from Brooklyn Bryant and Kayli Curry and they added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Shelby McDaniels reached on an error and scored on a ground out by Jansen Kimble.

Grafton threatened in the top of the seventh with two runs, but the Lady Bucs held on for the 7-6 win.

Rohr led the 11-hit attack with three hits while McDaniels and Curry each had two.

Kimble went the distance to earn the win.

She gave up just four earned runs on eight hits and struck out four.

In Thursday’s outing with Lincoln, the Cougars scored twice in the top of the first, but B-U matched that with two of their own in the bottom of the first with McDaniels and Brooklyn Robinson each getting a RBI.

Lincoln went up 5-2 in the top of the third, but the Lady Bucs answered with two runs in their half of the third on a one-run double from McDaniels and a one-run single from Hayden Peters making it a 5-4 game.

Lincoln pushed across four runs in the top of the fourth for a 9-4 lead.

The Lady Bucs made it a 9-6 game in their half of the fourth getting a pair of one-run singles from McDaniels and Robin Ball.

Lincoln chased across three runs in the top of the fifth and four more in the sixth for their 16-6 win.

McDaniels had three hits and three RBIs to lead the B-U offense.

She also suffered the loss in the circle going 5 1/3 innings and allowing 13 earned runs on 17 hits.

In their tournament opener with Bridgeport, it was all Lady Bucs as they used a 10-run third inning to secure the win.

They sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning taking the 10-0 lead.

Bridgeport scored twice in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Bucs scored one more in the bottom of the fifth on a game-ending home run by McDaniels.

The Lady Bucs had 11 hits in the win with McDaniels and Robinson each getting three.

Kimble pitched all five innings to get the win.

She gave up just two earned runs on four hits in the victory.

In their game on Saturday with Liberty, the Lady Bucs took a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.

Robinson knocked home McDaniels in the first inning and Rohr and McDaniels both had RBIs in the second inning.

Liberty scored one in the top of the third and three more in the top of the fourth for a 4-3 lead, but B-U answered with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth when McDaniels hit a two-run double, and Ball hit a one-run double making it a 6-4 game.

Liberty scored a run in the top of the fifth to close it to a 6-5 contest then the wheels came off for the Lady Bucs as Liberty scored 14 runs in the top of the sixth for a 19-6 lead.

The Lady Bucs scored three times in the bottom of the sixth, but the game was called on the mercy rule.

Buckhannon-Upshur outhit Liberty by a 13-12 margin but was guilty of seven errors.

Rohr, McDaniels, and Ball all had three hits for the Lady Bucs.

Kimble suffered the loss going 5 2/3 innings as she allowed only four earned runs on eight hits while fanning three.

The action left the Lady Bucs with a 7-6 record heading into Monday’s game with University.

They will visit Parkersburg South on Thursday and then visit Roane County on Saturday.
