Softball Lady Bucs down North Marion, 6-3

Alli Robinson hikes HR total to eight

RACHEL – It was a winning formula for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc softball team here Thursday in a Big 10 Conference battle with the North Marion Lady Huskies.

Senior Alli Robinson hit two more home runs and freshman Alyssa Rohr pitched a solid complete game as the Lady Bucs won a 6-3 decision.

The two home runs by Robinson gave her eight on the season in eight games.

“We played a really solid North Marion team and did a fantastic job holding them to a few runs and continually adding on throughout the game,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender.

The Lady Bucs took the lead in the top of the first when Ciara Melton singled home Morgan Parsons.

North Marion deadlocked the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the first.

The Lady Bucs recaptured the lead in the top of the third on Robinson’s first home run of the day, a line drive over the fence in center field.

North Marion again tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth following a Buckhannon-Upshur error.

Bender turned to his bench to Kayli Curry and Olivia Caynor for the Lady Bucs’ third run.

Curry pinch hit a single into left field that scored Caynor, who was pinch running.

“Kayli hit a ball between third and short and Olivia made a nice read on it to score,” remarked Bender. “It ended up getting through for the single but it was a great fundamental softball play that put us up by one. North Marion didn’t start their ace (Cara Minor) against us but they brought her in during this pivotal moment and our players found a way to be successful.”

Buckhannon-Upshur made it a 4-2 game in the top of the sixth inning when Hayden Peters singled home Brooklyn Robinson.

Another error led to an unearned run for North Marion in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 4-3 game.

Alli Robinson gave the Lady Bucs some breathing room in the top of the seventh, launching a two-run blast over the left field fence that scored Hailey Thompson.

“Alli had an insane at-bat against Minor and worked the count to 3-2,” said Bender. “She fouled off several pitches before hitting the home run. It’s the best at-bat I have ever seen.”

North Marion put two runners on the bottom of the seventh but Rohr slammed the door shut on the Lady Huskies keeping the runners stranded on the bases.

“Alyssa pitched her guts out,” stated Bender. “She’s still recovering from an injury and it was her first game back and she threw a complete game and worked out of some major jams showing a lot of heart.”

Rohr gave up just one earned run on five hits and fanned one.

B-U collected nine hits in the contest with Alli Robinson, Melton and Robin Ball each getting two.

The win improved the Lady Bucs to 5-3 on the season heading into Saturday’s conference game with Lincoln.

They will return to action today hosting Grafton at 5 p.m.
