Softball Lady Bucs defeat Bridgeport, but gets ousted from sectional tournament by University

Katarah Linger (5) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs makes a play from second baseball against Bridgeport during their sectional tournament game. The Lady Bucs beat Bridgeport, 5-3.

MORGANTOWN – The Buckhannon-Upshur softball Lady Bucs saw their season come to a close Saturday with an 8-0 loss to University in the sectional title game at Mylan Park.

The Lady Bucs would have needed to beat the Hawks twice for the sectional crown in the double elimination tournament playing out of the loser’s bracket.

The Bucs made it to the championship round with a 5-3 victory over Bridgeport on Friday, eliminating the Indians from the tournament.

Bridgeport took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Lady Bucs responded with a two-run third inning on a two-run single by Robin Ball.

The Lady Bucs added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jansen Kimble knocked in Megan Bailey with a single and she and Brooklyn Bryant later scored on an error giving the Lady Bucs a 5-1 lead.

Bridgeport scored twice in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of unearned runs to make the final score 5-3.

The Lady Bucs had nine hits in the win with Bailey collecting three and Ball two.

Kimble (9-9) went the distance in the circle allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out two.

“Jansen was an animal pitching,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender. “She was pitching with a tight strike zone and battled through the adversity. It was really awesome to see her mature in this game.”

Against University on Saturday, it was one bad inning that did in the Lady Bucs.

They fell behind by a 1-0 score after one inning when Meysa Hietmann tripled and scored on Anna Argrabrite’s single.

The scored stayed at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when University scored seven runs, just three of them earned, ending the game on the mercy rule at 8-0.

The Lady Bucs managed just one hit in the contest, a first-inning double by Shelby McDaniels.

Kimble (9-10) pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed just two earned runs on eight hits while fanning five.

The Lady Bucs ended the year with an 11-12 record.
