Softball Lady Bucs cruise past Fairmont Senior in 9-1 victory

Audrey Gaudet of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs collected a hit and knocked in a run to help her team to a 9-1 victory over the Fairmont Senior Lady Polar Bears Thursday evening in Big 10 Conference action.

TENNERTON – Alyssa Rohr pitched five strong innings and Alli Robinson hit a home run that still hasn’t landed as the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc softball team defeated Fairmont Senior by a 9-1 score in a Big 10 Conference game here Thursday evening.

The game was called after five innings on the mercy rule.

Robinson’s home run happened in the bottom of the fifth as she led off the inning.

It was her ninth home run of the season.

“It was an absolute moon shot,” exclaimed Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender. “You could have put a stewardess on it, that is how long it was in the air.”

Fairmont Senior scored an unearned run in the top of the first but their lead didn’t last long as the Lady Bucs answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first when Ciara Melton scored Rohr on a ground out RBI.

The Lady Bucs took their first lead in the bottom of the third with a three-run inning.

Shelby McDaniels scored Brooklyn Bryant when her ground ball was misplayed, Alli Robison laced a triple to left field scoring McDaniels and Melton doubled to center field scoring Robinson.

That gave Buckhannon-Upshur a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Bucs tacked on two more in the bottom of fourth when Rohr hit a one-run triple and then scored on passed ball.

That upped the Lady Bucs lead to 6-1.

Robinson’s solo blast made it 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Melton kept the inning going with a double and Brooklyn Robinson drew a walk.

Audrey Gaudet singled home Melton and the game ended on the mercy rule when Kayli Curry doubled to center field bringing home Brooklyn Robinson.

“We played very fundamental softball again,” stated Bender. “We didn’t come out super strong allowing a run in the top of the first, but we answered and kept adding to our lead throughout the game.”

The Lady Bucs collected nine hits in the five-inning game with Rohr, Alli Robinson, Melton and Curry each getting two apiece.

“I thought we hit the ball well with seven extra-base hits,” stated Bender. “I think Rohr’s RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth kind of put the game in our favor.”

Rohr earned the win pitching five innings and allowing no earned runs on just two hits while walking three and striking out nine.

“Alyssa was just nasty in the circle and competed on every pitch,” remarked Bender. “She worked out of jams with big strikeouts hitting the corners consistently and wasn’t afraid to throw any pitch on any count. It was a fun game to call pitches in.”

The win improved the Lady Bucs to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the Big 10 Conference.

They were slated to play Roane County Friday and then Roane County again and Elkins on Saturday.

They will return to action today when they host East Fairmont at 5 p.m. and University at 7 p.m.

They will visit Robert C. Byrd Tuesday at 5 p.m.
