Softball Lady Bobcats win four on northern panhandle road trip

WHEELING – A trip to the state’s northern panhandle was just was the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team needed to turn things around.

Heading north on a four-game losing streak, Wesleyan won all four games this past weekend, taking a doubleheader from Wheeling on Saturday, 6-1 and 9-1, and taking two more from West Liberty on Sunday, 5-2 and 7-5.

The four wins left head coach Steve Warner’s squad with a 12-8 overall record and kept them in third place in the MEC South with a 12-8 league mark.

Against Wheeling in the opener Saturday, Wesleyan went up 3-0 in the top of the first after Kiley Turner hit a sacrifice fly that scored Grace Smith and Kelley Bourne and Bella Posey each hit one-run singles.

Bourne made it a 4-0 game in the top of the fifth with a solo home run.

Kennedy Cowart had an RBI sacrifice bunt and Lauryn King hit a one-run single for Wesleyan in the top of the sixth making it a 6-0 game.

Wheeling avoided the shutout with a solo home by Gina Fogle in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Wesleyan had 12 hits with King collecting three.

Abigail O’Shields (5-4) earned the win going the distance and giving up just one earned run on three hits while striking out seven.

Game two saw Wesleyan take another 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

This time, Brooke Clark hit a solo home run, Turner bunted home a run and Bourne had a one-run single to account for the scoring.

Wheeling managed a run in the bottom of the first, but Smith countered with a one-run single in the top of the second making it a 4-1 contest.

Smith hit a one-run double and later scored on a Wheeling error on a ball hit by King, and King scored on another Wheeling error in the top of the fourth as Wesleyan took a 7-1 lead.

An error allowed Molly Osborne to score, and King hit a one-run single for Wesleyan in the top of the fifth as the Lady ‘Cats made it a 9-1 contest.

The game was halted after five innings on the mercy rule.

Clark, Smith, Bourne and Osborne all had two hits for Wesleyan as they banged out 11 in the win.

Paige Maltby (1-1) picked up the win for Wesleyan as she pitched all five innings.

She gave up just one earned run on three hits while fanning one.

Wesleyan’s two wins against West Liberty on Sunday were quality wins as the Hilltoppers entered the games as a 20-win club.

West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Wesleyan pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth when King scored on an error, Turner scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch to Osborne and Bourne scored on a bases load walk to Clark.

Wesleyan made it a 5-1 game in the top of the seventh behind a two-run home run from King.

West Liberty scored a run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get any closer than 5-2.

Wesleyan had five hits in the win with Smith, Cowart, King, Bourne and Posey each getting one.

O’Shields upped her mark to 6-4 as she twirled the complete game and allowed just one earned run on three hits while fanning two.

In game two, West Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Wesleyan answered with a four-run second inning.

Osborne hit a two-run double, and Clark smacked a two-run home run to give the Lady ‘Cats a 4-1 advantage.

West Liberty scored two runs in the third and fourth innings taking a 5-4 lead.

Wesleyan tied the game in the top of the fifth when Cowart hit a single down the left field line that scored Clark.

The game went extra innings tied at 5-5 before Wesleyan won it with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning behind a two-run single from Osborne.

Wesleyan had 10 hits in the win with Clark, Cowart, Grace Hightower and Osborne each getting two.

Maltby (2-0) got the win tossing all eight innings. She gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out two.

Wesleyan will return to action Wednesday hosting Davis & Elkins in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
