Softball Lady Bobcats sweep doubleheader from Alderson Broaddus

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats returned to their winning ways here Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers at Culpepper Field.

The Lady ‘Cats won the opener by a 7-3 score and came back to take the nightcap, 4-2.

The doubleheader sweep improved head coach Steve Warner’s team to 8-10 overall.

The Lady ‘Cats used the long ball in the opener to get past the Battlers.

Lauryn King smashed a two-run home run that scored Kennedy Cowart in the bottom of the first to stake Wesleyan to an early 2-0 lead.

After Alderson Broaddus scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, Wesleyan’s Kiley Turner answered with a three-run blast that scored King and pinch runner Paije Bragg.

That gave Wesleyan a 5-1 lead.

The Battlers scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 5-3 contest but Wesleyan countered with a pair of their own runs in the bottom of the sixth behind a one-run double from Brooke Clark and a one-run single by Destiny Alvarado.

Wesleyan collected 10 hits in the win with Alvarado and Lauren Niglio each getting three apiece.

Hannah Hudson improved her record to 4-3 tossing a complete game.

She gave up two earned runs on three hits while striking out two.

In the nightcap, Alderson Broaddus took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run double by Lauren Meyer.

The Lady ‘Cats dialed up the long ball again as Alvarado crushed a two-run blast in the bottom of the third that scored Clark and deadlocked the game at 2-2.

Wesleyan took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth when Turner hit a one-run double and Niglio smacked a one-run single.

Alderson Broaddus put two runners into scoring position in the top of the seventh, but Wesleyan starter Haylee Shires got Emily Rhodes to ground out to the shortstop for the final out of the game.

Wesleyan mustered out six hits with Clark, Alvarado, Cowart, King, Turner and Niglio each getting one apiece.

Shires went the distance to improve her mark to 3-5 in a complete-game effort.

She surrendered just two earned runs on nine hits while striking out four.

The Lady Bobcats will return to action Saturday as they visit Concord for a conference twin bill at 1 p.m.
