Softball Lady Bobcats split a doubleheader with Davis & Elkins

Wesleyan’s King has nine RBIs’ in 20-19 extra-innings setback

BUCKHANNON – In his near three-decade coaching career, West Virginia Wesleyan head coach Steve has probably seen just about everything there is in the game of softball.

Then, Tuesday’s second game of a doubleheader with Davis & Elkins came along.

The Lady Bobcats were up 10-0 after two innings of play but wound up losing the game by a 20-19 score in extra innings.

Wasted in the loss was a nine RBI game by the Lady ‘Cats’ centerfielder and clean-up hitter Lauryn King.

Things went a little smoother for Wesleyan in game one as they defeated Davis & Elkins by a 7-5 score.

In game two, King started the scoring spree with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and then hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second to go along with a one-run single from Grace Smith and a one-run double from Bella Posey to stake the ‘Cats to their 10-0 lead.

A two-run single by Davis & Elkins’ Christina Kosier in the top of the third made it a 10-2 game but King hit a one-run single in Wesleyan’s half of the third for an 11-2 advantage.

Davis & Elkins had a five-run fifth inning to close the game to 11-7 but Wesleyan responded with four runs in their half of the inning when Brooke Clark was hit by a bases loaded pitch and Kaitlyn Rizor hit a three-run double to left field increasing Wesleyan’s lead to 15-7.

Davis & Elkins chased across four runs in the fifth and sixth inning tying the game at 15-15, but Wesleyan reclaimed the lead with a three-run sixth inning when King drew a based loaded walk that scored Grace Hightower and Kiley Turner hit a two-run single up the middle making it an 18-15 game.

Davis & Elkins tied the game with a three-run top of the seventh and took the lead in the top of eighth on a two-run double by Lilly Saucedo for a 20-18 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Cowart led off with a single and Kelley Bourne hit a two-out single moving her to second.

Posey hit a ball to right field that was misplayed allowing Cowart to score and moving Bourne to third base.

With runners at second and third, Hightower flew out to center field for the final out of the game.

Wesleyan had 14 hits in the contest with King leading the way with three.

Rachel Eastburn was one of four pitchers used by Wesleyan and she suffered the loss.

She pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits.

In game one, Clark hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first for Wesleyan, but the Senators scored four times in the top of the third for a 4-1 lead.

Turner had a sacrifice bunt RBI for Wesleyan in the top of the third and Clark hit an infield single that scored Hightower in the bottom of the fourth bringing the Lady ‘Cats to within one, at 4-3.

Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the fifth behind a one-run single from Turner and a two-run triple from Hightower making it a 6-4 game.

King singled up the middle scoring Clark in the bottom of the sixth upping the Wesleyan lead to 7-4.

The Senators scored a run in the top of the seventh inning but couldn’t get any closer than two runs.

King and Clark each had three of Wesleyan’s 12 hits in the win.

Abigail O’Shields (7-4) picked up the win going the distance.

She gave up five earned runs on seven hits while fanning five.

The split left Davis & Elkins with a 10-14 record while Wesleyan is now 13-9 overall.

The Lady ‘Cats will host Charleston Saturday at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader then remain home Sunday and host West Virginia State in a twin bill at 1 p.m.
