Softball Lady Bobcats go 2-2 on first two days of spring break tour in Florida

CLERMONT (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats went 2-2 on their first two days of action on their annual spring break tour of Florida this past weekend.

The Lady ‘Cats opened play on Saturday with a pair of wins, getting past the University of Findlay by a 4-3 score and downing Felician University, 6-4.

On Sunday, they had the tables turned on them and dropped an 8-0 decision to Malone University in six innings and then lost a 6-2 contest to No. 25 Gannon.

In Saturday’s opener with Findlay, Wesleyan went down by a 2-0 score after one inning of play.

With one swing of the bat, Destiny Alvarado gave Wesleyan a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run that scored Kiley Turner and Kennedy Cowart.

Wesleyan used the long ball again to extend their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning when Lauryn King smacked a solo home run.

Findlay scored a run in the top of the seventh to make it a 4-3 game, but Wesleyan starting pitcher Haylee Shires got Salwa Al-Hajabe to fly out to right field and strand runners at second and third base.

Wesleyan collected just four hits in the game, the home runs by King and Alvarado and singles from King and Turner.

Shires improved her record to 1-1 as she twirled a complete game.

She allowed three earned runs on eight hits while walking two and fanning three.

Allison Brunner and Dylan Wiley each had two hits for Findlay.

Carly Brandon suffered the loss for Findlay in a complete-game effort.

She gave up four earned runs on four hits and walked four while striking out seven.

In Wesleyan’s second game on Saturday, King homered again, this time a two-run shot in the top of the third to treat Wesleyan to a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nicole Spiegelberg hit a two-run home run for Felcian and they added another run on a wild pitch as they took the lead, 3-2.

Wesleyan tied it in the top of the sixth when Ciana Bowen singled home pinch runner Paije Bragg.

Wesleyan retook the lead in the top of the seventh capitalizing on two Felician errors and a two-run single by Cowart.

Felcian chased across one run in the bottom of the seventh, but Wesleyan starter Hannah Hudson closed the door striking out Ribaudo with runners at first and second.

Wesleyan smacked out 10 hits in the win with King, Cowart, and Alvarado each getting two each.

Hudson evened her mark at 1-1 tossing a complete game.

She gave up just one earned run on six hits while walking four and striking out 10.

Bella Bradian had two of Felician’s four hits.

Martina Crumb suffered the loss for Felcian in a relief role.

She went three innings and gave up four unearned runs on five hits.

Little went right for Wesleyan in their shutout loss to Malone as the Lady ‘Cats committed four errors in the six innings of action.

Malone scored three in the top of the first and then added two more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.

They tacked on three more in the top of the sixth for their 8-0 advantage.

Wesleyan managed just four hits in the game, getting singles from Miranda Frye, King, Cowart and Lauren Niglio.

Hudson went just 3 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.

She allowed five earned runs on eight hits while not walking a batter and striking out five.

Bailey Byres led the Malone offense with four hits and four RBIs.

Against nationally-ranked Gannon, the Lady ‘Cats struck first in the top of the third when Alvarado laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored King from third base.

Wesleyan made it a 2-0 game in the top of the fourth when Megan Magsam drew a lead-off walk, went to second on a bunt by Celia Valencia, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Gannon error.

It was all Gannon after that as they deadlocked the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and then tacked on one more in the fifth and three more in the sixth to pull away with a four-run victory.

Clark had two of the five hits in the loss for Wesleyan.

Shires lowered her record to 1-2 going 5 2/3 innings and allowing four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out three.

Gannon collected 11 hits with Kellyn Perich and Sarah Ingerick each getting two.

Perich picked up the win in the circle tossing three innings of relief.

She didn’t allow a run on two hits.

The split left head coach Steve Warner and his team with a 2-4 record heading into Monday’s action against Mercyhurst and University of the Sciences.

They were slated to play Walsh and Georgian Court University Tuesday.

They will return to action today and wrap up the Florida portion of their trip when they battle Mercy College at 9 a.m. and Assumption College at 11:15 a.m.

Thursday will be an off day for the Lady ‘Cats as they move up the coast to Salem, Va. where they will face Salem (WV) University Friday at 5 p.m.
