Softball Lady Bobcats fall twice to West Virginia State

INSTITUTE – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats had trouble getting their offense going in a Mountain East Conference road doubleheader Thursday evening in a pair of losses.

West Virginia Wesleyan was one-hit in the opener in a 1-0 setback and then mustered just four hits in a 7-3 setback in game two.

The pair of losses left Wesleyan with a 16-20 record overall and a 9-13 MEC mark.

In game one, the lone run was scored by West Virginia State in the bottom of the fourth when Madison Rafuson singled home Paige Scruggs.

Wesleyan ruined Emilee Walker’s no-hit bid in the top of the seventh with their lone hit, a one-out single to left field by Destiny Alvarado.

Hannah Hudson (9-9) was almost as good as Walker pitching a complete-game two-hitter.

She allowed just the one earned run while striking out four.

Game two saw the Yellow Jackets take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Wesleyan responded with a two-run home run from Kelley Bourne in the top of the second to make it a 3-2 contest.

The Lady ‘Cats tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third when Lauryn King hit a one-run single to left field scoring Kiley Turner.

Wesleyan could never take the lead though as the Yellow Jackets scored twice in the fifth and the sixth for the 7-3 win.

Haylee Shires (5-9) started the game and suffered the loss going 4 2/3 innings.
