Softball Lady Bobcats drop two to UVa.-Wise in conference play


WISE (Va.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the UVa.-Wise Cavaliers Sunday afternoon here in Mountain East Conference action at Cavalier Field.

Wesleyan managed just three runs on the day in a 4-2 setback in game one and a 7-1 loss in game two.

In game one, it started out well for the Lady ‘Cats as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

Megan Magsamen singled home Lauryn King and Celia Valencia tripled down the right field line to bring home Magsamen to account for the scoring.

UVa.-Wise got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Taylor Creasey singled home Ava Hockey to make it a 2-1 contest.

A three-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth gave UVa.-Wise the lead.

Nikki Smith hit a one-run double, Kaylee Jones smacked a one-run center and Shannon Bennett reached on an error for the scoring.

Wesleyan threatened in the top of the seventh putting two runners on but they couldn’t push a run across.

Both teams had eight hits in the contest.

Kennedy Cowart had two to lead the Lady Bobcats.

Hannah Hudson suffered the loss dropping her ledger to 5-4.

She went the distance and gave up three earned runs on eight hits and fanned four.

In game two, the Cavaliers scored twice in the bottom of the first and tacked on one more in the bottom of the second for a 3-0 lead.

Wesleyan’s lone run came in the top of the fifth when Brooke Clark doubled home Magsamen.

UVa.-Wise put the game away in the bottom of the fifth with four runs with the inning being highlighted by a three-run home run by Julia Hoy.

Wesleyan managed just four hits with Clark getting two and Lauren Niglio and Magsamen the other two.

Haylee Shires (3-7) lasted just 1 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits.

Kelley Bourne tossed the final 4 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits.

With the two wins, UVa.-Wise improved to 11-12 overall and 5-3 in the MEC.

The pair of losses left Wesleyan with a 9-13 record overall and a 2-6 record in the MEC.

Wesleyan will return to action this Saturday heading to South Euclid (Ohio) for a MEC doubleheader with Notre Dame College.

The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
