Soccer Lady ‘Cats have field day against winless Wheeling with a 7-0 victory


BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat soccer team made short work of the winless Wheeling Cardinals here Wednesday evening at Culpepper Stadium with a dominating 7-0 victory.

Shannon Shawgo, Madison LaPole and Makatlyn Tucker each had two goals to pace the Lady Bobcat attack in the win.

Shawgo put Wheeling on notice early in the match when she scored an unassisted goal just two minutes into the contest.

LaPole put in her first goal on the game four minutes later with the assist going to Haelly Ramirez to stake Wesleyan to a 2-0 lead.

Shawgo scored her second goal of the game, another unassisted goal, in the 19th minute to up Wesleyan’s lead to 3-0.

Tucker got into the scoring act in the 36th minute with a goal with the assist going to LaPole.

That treated Wesleyan to a 4-0 lead.

Tucker scored again three minutes later with her second goal to increase the Lady Bobcat advantage to 5-0.

Danielle Jones was credited with the assist.

Wesleyan took their 5-0 lead with them into the locker room.

Casey Underwood struck in the 52nd minute for a goal for Wesleyan with the assist going to Chrystal Posada to increase the advantage to 6-0.

LaPole wrapped up the scoring with her second goal, an unassisted goal, in the 67th minute.

Wesleyan held an 11-4 lead in shots-on-goal and a 6-2 margin in corner kicks.

Wesleyan’s keepers, Chelsea Hubner and Bailey Heubi each turned away two shots.

Wheeling’s Megan Herter made four saves.

Wesleyan was called for five fouls while Wheeling was guilty of three.

Wheeling dropped to 0-17 overall and 0-14 in the MEC.

The Lady ‘Cats locked down the second spot in the MEC South Division as they currently own an 11-6 record overall and a 9-4 mark in the league.

They will close out their regular-season schedule Sunday when they visit Davis & Elkins for a conference contest starting at 1 p.m.
