TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc soccer team will get their 2021 season underway today as they visit Parkersburg for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
The two teams met during the summer in a 7v7 tournament.
“Parkersburg has some talented players, but I think we can play with them,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “Hopefully we can find the best positioning to where it makes us the strongest and most successful. We are still working on some things, but we are getting closer to being where we want to be.”
Zuliani said she was happy with how your preseason unfolded.
“Overall we had a great preseason,” noted Zuliani. “I think the girls are ready to get into playing our schedule. Everyone love games more than practice and we can see they are wanting to play.”
Zuliani and her Lady Bucs were only able to get one scrimmage under their belt, a contest with Hurricane last Saturday.
“Hurricane scored one goal on us, and it was on a communication issue on defense, but we adjusted well,” stated Zuliani. “Our defense played well. Kierra Arbogast, Allison Andrew and Miranda Green did very well defensively. We had a young midfield and several younger players on the field. The girls did their best and will just keep improving. The team held their own and I could see they effort. Everyone was nervous and it was very hot and fatigue set in quicker than we need it to, but we will keep working. I was very pleased with our backs. We moved Ashley Catlin back there for multiple reasons and she did not disappoint us. She is very coachable and is a team player. She just wants to play and help the team, and doesn’t care what position she is in. Freshman Harley Dean doesn’t have much keeper experience, but on the first day when Kyndal Davis went out with a pretty bad ankle sprain, Harley stepped up! She put in extra practice with the keeper coach and has worked hard. She had some great saves and we are proud of her and how well she did for us.”
The Lady Bucs were supposed to have a second scrimmage lined up with George Washington on Tuesday but G-W pulled out of it and then the Lady Bucs were able to line up a replacement with Winfield on Wednesday, but that got canceled because of the rain.
With the loss of six seniors off of last year’s 9-4-1 team, the Lady Bucs will have a different look to them this season.
Zuliani said her probable staring line-up for today’s opener will have Lexi Kelley at striker, Cameron Zuliani at left mid wing and right Catherine Oliveto at right mid wing.
“We still working with the midfield, but Ava Hollen, Grace Queen, Hannah Boyles, Kyleigh Keener and Chloe Cale are all in the mix there,”said Zuliani “In the back we have Allison Andrew, Miranda Green, Kierra Arbogast and Ashley Catlin. Greene will also be used in the midfield and Boyles, Keener and Queen may also play some defense for us. We are very young and our depth of experienced players is small, but if people keep working hard, they will improve and will be able to contribute.”
Following their opener today, the Lady Bucs will host Charleston Catholic Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
