Soccer Lady Bucs fall late to Parkersburg, 5-4


PARKERSBURG – It was a contest that saw momentum swing to both teams for the Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Lady Bucs and the Parkersburg Big Reds in their season opener Saturday.

The Big Reds raced out to a 3-1 lead at the half only to watch the Lady Bucs score three straight for a 4-3 lead before Buckhannon-Upshur gave up two goals in the final nine minutes of the contest in a 5-4 setback.

Hannah Boyles played a pass from the outside right to Catherine Oliveto who scored in the seventh minute of the game to stake the Lady Bucs to a 1-0 lead.

Parkersburg though, scored three unassisted goals in a five-minute time span for a 3-1 lead, which would be their lead at intermission.

Miranda Greene made it a 3-2 contest with an unassisted goal after dribbling it up the right side and putting it past Big Red keeper Hailee Merritt in the 60th minute.

Just five minutes later, Allison Andrew cleaned up a rebound off of Merritt and scored a goal to even the game at 3-3.

In the 71st minute, Ava Hollen gave the Lady Bucs a 4-3 lead when she dribbled down the center of the field and scored on a shot 10 yards out.

It took Parkersburg less than 30 seconds to tie the game at 4-4 when Jenna Carpenter scored.

Parkersburg scored the game-winner with 1:35 remaining when Margaret Mildren found the back of the net.

The Lady Bucs were outshot by a 12-11 margin but owned a 5-2 lead in corner kicks.

Harley Dean made seven saves in net for the Lady Bucs while Merritt made seven stops for Parkersburg.

The Lady Bucs (0-1) will return to action today hosting Charleston Catholic at 5:30 p.m.
