Soccer ‘Cats begin season with 3-1 win over Cal. (Pa.)

BUCKHANNON – Connor Hartwell had a goal and an assist to lead the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats to a convincing 3-1 opening day win over the visiting California (Pa.) Vulcans Thursday evening.

Hartwell made his presence known early as he set up his assist in the third minute of the game.

He sent a pass to Hunter Dierlam who headed it home to stake Wesleyan to a quick 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, Hartwell got into the scoring act himself with an unassisted goal on a free kick after a California hand ball just outside the box.

That gave Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.

California snuck in a goal right before the end of the first half when Zach Vanek scored with the assist going to Michael McAnalley.

That made it a 2-1 game at the half.

Wesleyan had a strong start to the second half when Andrew White scored on a goal after playing a long cross from Nika Monaselidze in the 48th minute treating Wesleyan to a 3-1 advantage.

Wesleyan made that 3-1 lead stand up the rest of the way.

Wesleyan held a 5-4 lead in shots-on-goal and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Wesleyan keeper Logan Nelson made three saves while California’s keeper, Trevor Zabilowicz made two stops.

Wesleyan (1-0) will play again Wednesday as they open up their MEC portion of their schedule at Alderson Broaddus University.

Game time is set for 6 p.m.
