LEWISBURG – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs fell behind by a 2-0 score in their opener Saturday with Greenbrier East and was forced to play catch up the rest of the way, eventually falling to the Spartans by a 2-1 score.
Drew Beverage gave Greenbrier East a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when he cleaned up a loose ball with a shot and goal to the near post.
The Bucs caught a bad break right before the first half expired as Adam Seams unleashed a shot from 18 yards out that deflected into the B-U goal giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
“Our youth and inexperience showed a lot in the first half,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato.
The Bucs got on the scoreboard six minutes into the second half when Owen Cutright angled a through ball from the left and Noah Radabaugh put a shot into the net to the far post.
The Bucs were never able to get that game-tying goal though, as they suffered the one-goal loss.
“We've been asking a lot out of our guys early on this season,” stated Donato. ”All starting positions with the exception of goalkeeper are new players, new starters, or are playing at a new position, so even though we've had a great preseason, that game experience is still something we've been lacking. Between the weather and short roster, we really didn't get the opportunity to work through the adjustments from the Parkersburg scrimmage until the first half today, but once we got settled in and worked through another adjustment or two at the half, we really became a different team. In the second half we played much better team defense and made better decisions with the ball.”
The Bucs outshot Greenbrier East by a 7-6 margin but trailed in corner kicks by a 4-0 count.
The Bucs were guilty of two fouls while the Spartans were called for nine.
Dalton Auvil made four saves in net for the Bucs while Evan Vogelsong stopped six for the Spartans.
The Bucs (0-1) will be back in action Thursday when they host Wheeling Park at 6 p.m. in their home opener.
