CLARKSBURG – The Buckhannon-Upshur boys soccer team won the statistical battle against the Robert C. Byrd Eagles but couldn’t win the battle on the scoreboard Tuesday evening in a Big 10 Conference clash.
The Bucs dropped a 2-1 decision despite owning a 12-4 margin in shots-on-goal and a 6-0 lead in corner kicks.
Robert C. Byrd took the lead in the 12th minute when Alex Bovino scored on a direct kick just outside the penalty area.
That was the only goal of the first half.
The Bucs tied the game in the 51st minute when Josh Gregory played a cross from the right corner from Lane Tenney and scored with a shot to the back post.
The game-winner for Robert C. Byrd belonged to Anthony Williams who scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
The Bucs played the game without one of their senior captains on defense – Sam Squires.
“Although I feel we played well we just couldn't find a way to get the win,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “We made two critical mistakes in a dangerous area of the field and Robert C. Byrd was able to take advantage. Without Squires in the lineup, we again had to make some adjustments and we're still trying to get a feel for lineups and adjustments. Our positioning has been getting better along with passing and movement and we'll continue to play smarter and harder.”
Both Buckhannon-Upshur and Robert C. Byrd were both guilty of six fouls apiece.
Dalton Auvil made two saves for the Bucs in net while counterpart Anthony Carsini made 11 saves for Robert C. Byrd.
The loss was the fourth in the last five games for the Bucs as they saw their record drop to 6-4-1 overall and 5-2 in the Big 10 Conference.
The Bucs will return to the pitch today when they visit Morgantown at 6 p.m.
They will return home Saturday when they host Hurricane at 3 p.m.
