TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Dawson Carpenter scored in the third minute of the game against North Marion in their Big 10 Conference opener here Tuesday at Ted Crites Alumni Field at Tom Hasbrouck Stadium.
Then the Bucs scored again, and again, and again and again.
When the onslaught was over, the Bucs pounded the Huskies by a 9-0 score.
Ryan Hurst continued to torch the nets this season with three goals as Carpenter added two while Tyler Sandreth, Haven Tyson, Isaac Stankus and Reis Leonard all getting into the scoring act.
“This was a great way to start conference play,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “Games like this, we like to look at little things like creating chances, shape, and movement. We challenge guys by giving them small things to work on in game situations and saw it play out. I was pleased to see them step up in those situations and come through.”
Carpenter’s first goal at the three-minute mark was set up by Hurst with a pass inside the penalty area as he finished it off with a shot to the back post.
Hurst tallied the next two goals within a minute of each other just three minutes later
Caio Silva played a cross from the right corner and Hurst had a touch and a shot to the back post for the first goal and then played a through ball from Carpenter and finished with a shot to the near post.
That gave the Bucs a 3-0 lead.
Carpenter made it 4-0 in the 39th minute when a North Marion defender misplayed a clear and dribbled it in and scored with a shot to the far post.
Sandreth wrapped up the first-half scoring right before the half when he took a loose ball inside the penalty area and scored to the far post.
The Bucs led 5-0 at the break.
B-U’s Haven Tyson scored on a header playing a cross from Hurst in the 46th minute and Hurst played a through ball from Lamar Hurst for a score a minute later to increase the Buckhannon-Upshur advantage to 7-0.
Stankus controlled a loose ball off a deflection by the North Marion keeper and scored to the back post in the 68th minute.
Leonard played a ball from Carpenter and scored from 25 yards out with a volley shot to end the scoring for the Bucs.
With the blowout, Donato was able to play a lot of his younger players in the game to get them varsity experience.
“This game also gave us an opportunity to give some younger players quality varsity experience,” stated Donato. “You never know when you need guys to step up so those minutes are vital to building a program.”
The Buccaneers dominated the statistical sheet as they held North Marion without a shot-on-goal while taking 18.
The Bucs also led in corner kicks by an 8-1 margin.
Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of eight fouls while the Huskies were called for just one.
