Soccer Bucs tie with Woodrow Wilson

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School boys’ soccer team played at home on Saturday, September 25, 2021 against Woodrow Wilson. The final score was a tie, 4 – 4.

The Buccaneers’ Noah Radabaugh scored the first goal in the 2nd minute. The ball was deflected off the defender and was shot just outside the goal box. Woodrow Wilson’s Carson Eckley then dribbled through the defender and shot to the back corner in the 5th minute. Andre Wright made a quick pass in the penalty area and shot to the far post, setting the score to 2 – 1 with Woodrow Wilson in the lead. The Bucs’ Jared Brandish evened the score in the 11th minute with a free kick from 25 yards to the left side of the goal and over the goalkeeper.

Woodrow Wilson came up one when Eckley kicked a free kick for a hard shot off the goal keeper’s hands in the 16th minute. B-U’s Cam Carpenter assisted Radabaugh with a diagonal ball that finished at the near post to tie the game once again.

The second half of the game started out with a goal by Eckley for a back corner shot in the 51st minute. Sealing the tie for the game, the Bucs’ Radabaugh shot a center pass to Caden Andrick from 20 yards out.

“We challenged the team at practice yesterday and again during pregame that Woodrow Wilson would come out very physical, and we need to match that physicality and intensity. I feel that not only did we match it, but surpassed it for long stretches of the match,” said Coach Mike Donato. “Going in, I honestly expected a low-scoring game, so for this game to turn into a shootout was a bit of a surprise. We were able to hold our own though, creating some good scoring chances and capitalizing on some set pieces.”

Coach Donato was impressed with his team’s effort and looks forward to their contest. He expressed, “This team continues to grow and play well together. We’ve seen a fighting spirit and unwillingness to quit that makes me very proud!”

The B-UHS boys’ soccer team will play again at home on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.
