TENNERTON – Ryan Hurst scored five goals and added an assist and Lane Tenney added three goals and an assist as the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers completely dominated the Lincoln Cougars in their season debut winning a 14-0 contest Thursday evening at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
With the entire first half being played in Lincoln’s end, the Bucs raced out to a 9-0 lead at the half and scored five more times in the second half for the victory as Buckhannon-Upshur honored their seven seniors in the opener.
“I love the fact that we got the opportunity to get our season underway and play tonight's game, especially since we honored our seniors,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “With a shorter practice schedule this year and only one scrimmage, we had to make sure we had everything we wanted as far as depth and rotations in shorter amount of time.”
Hurst started things five minutes in as he took a pass from across the penalty area from Caden Andrick and finished a shot to the back post.
Tenney scored his first goal five minutes later as he played a through ball from Josh Gregory and scored from five yards out.
Hurst scored the next three goals in a span of two minutes from the 18th to 20th minute.
He and Gregory teamed up for the first two goals and Hurst scored an unassisted goal on a rebound shot for the third one to stake B-U to a 5-0 lead.
Jared Brandish got into the scoring act in the 22nd minute with a goal to the far post with the assist going to Hurst.
Reis Leonard scored an unassisted goal after he dribbled in and nailed a shot to the far post in the 26th minute.
Noah Radabaugh took a pass from inside the penalty area from Tenney and scored with a goal to the near post in the 34th minute and then Radabaugh fed a through ball to Hurst who scored a goal three minutes later to wrap up the first-half scoring.
Sam Squires started the second-half scoring with a goal five minutes in after deflecting a Gregory corner kick to the near post to treat the Bucs to a 10-0 advantage.
Tenney scored consecutive goals in the 56th and 58th minute with the assists both going to Zach Calef-Boring.
Nathan Allen made it a 13-0 game after playing a cross into the penalty area from Bryer Ketterman with a one-touch finish.
Dalton Waguaman ended the scoring spree after Tenney chipped a pass into the penalty area to him and he finished with a shot to the near post.
While the Bucs scored at will, Donato credited his defense for pitching the shutout as Lincoln didn’t get off a shot.
“Anytime we shut out an opponent you have to look at how we defended as a team,” remarked Donato. “We pressed high and was able to win back possession rather quickly. I thought we actually moved and possessed better in the second half. There was more intent to build possession out of our back line and make smarter, more quality movements and passes.”
The Bucs racked up 29 shots-on-goal and were awarded seven corner kicks.
Dalton Auvil and Dirk Riley didn’t have to make a save for the Bucs in the net.
The Bucs were guilty of five fouls while Lincoln was called for four.
