WELLSBURG – The Buckhannon-Upshur boys soccer team saw their first live competition of the preseason Saturday at a soccer-o-rama at Brooke High School.
And if the scrimmage results are going to be any indication of how the season goes for head coach Mike Donato and his Buccaneers, they are going to be in store for quite the season.
The Bucs had a perfect sheet after playing three teams on Saturday in the blistering heat.
They defeated John Marshall by a 6-0 score, blanked Indian Creek (Ohio) by a 5-0 score and finished up downing Weir by a 2-0 score in a trio of 40 minute games.
Donato said he was using the scrimmage to find out a variety of things about his Buccaneers.
“The things we were looking to do with the scrimmages was establish depth at every position, see how different players developed over the past few weeks and get our younger players their first live taste of high school varsity soccer,” explained Donato.
Donato was of course pleased with what he saw from his Bucs.
“I was very pleased with how all our players performed,” remarked Donato. “The coaching staff was able to make notes and evaluations and place players in different positions throughout our formation.”
Donato stated it was difficult to pinpoint just a few players who played well when the entire team was playing well.
“It's really hard to point out just a few players who played well when you look at our performance as a whole,” stated Donato. “When you score 13 goals and allow none in three 40 minute games, the credit goes all around.”
The Bucs will have a final scrimmage Wednesday at Bridgeport at 6 p.m. before opening up the season Friday at Ripley in a non-conference clash at 6:30 p.m.
