TENNERTON – It is still only the first week of the season, but the Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs scored a major win against the Morgantown Mohigans Tuesday night at Ted Crites Alumni Field at Tom Hasbrouck Stadium.
The Bucs dealt sectional foe Morgantown a 6-1 setback as Ryan Hurst led the way with four goals and an assist.
Hurst has seven goals in the B-U’s first two games.
“Ryan has picked up where he left off last year with his goal production, but now he's moving and playing off the ball like never before,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato.
The Bucs fell behind early as Morgantown scored the game’s first goal when Mossimo Darmelio scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute.
It was all Buckhannon after that.
Lamar Hurst tallied his first goal of the season after Ryan Hurst played a cross to the middle and Lamar scored from the top of the box in the 34th minute to deadlock the game at 1-1.
Ryan Hurst found the back of the net with his first goal just a minute later to stake the Bucs to a 2-1 lead. He flickered a shot through the box and past Morgantown keeper Ben Meyer.
Caden Andrick got into the scoring act right before the half was over in the 38th minute when he played a cross to the back post from Lamar Hurst and scored to the back post to up the Buckhannon lead to 3-1.
The second half belonged to Ryan Hurst who scored a hat trick in the final 40 minutes.
He dribbled through the box and scored an unassisted goal from six yards out in the 60th minute and four minutes later, Dawson Carpenter sent a deep ball in and Hurst dribbled in through the box and finished with a goal to the near post to give the Bucs a 5-1 lead.
Hurst wrapped up the scoring in the 75th minute with an unassisted goal to give the Bucs their 6-1 win.
“Tonight was a true test of how this team is learning to adapt, overcome, and maintain composure,” remarked Donato. “We didn't let giving up that penalty kick early get us down and took the game to another level I haven't seen out of this team. I can't speak enough of how well we've been playing out of the middle of the field, particularly the play of Dawson Carpenter and Lane Tenney. Their coverage of the pitch and control in the middle has been great.”
The Bucs owned a 9-4 lead in shots-on-goal and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Fouls were even at 7-7.
Logan Kelley made three saves in the net for the Bucs while Meyer turned away three shots.
The Bucs, now 2-0, were slated to visit Wheeling Park on Thursday.
They will play Princeton Saturday at 11 a.m. on the turf at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
