Will host Preston on Tuesday

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur boys soccer team secured the top seed in this week’s Class AAA, Region 1, Section 2 Tournament with a 2-1 win over University Saturday at Ted Crites Alumni Field at Tom Hasbrouck Stadium.

The Bucs, who also defeated visiting Elkins,  5-1,  Thursday night for Senior Night, finished the regular season 11-4-5 and will host Preston at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the sectional opener. The teams battled to a 2-2 draw in last month’s meeting in Kingwood.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Joseph Biafora.

B-U answered in the 55th minute to tie the game when Trevor Short took a crossing pass from Zach Ward and converted from 25 yards out.

Short then scored the eventual winning goal eight minutes later when his direct kick from 20 yards out found the back of the net.

B-U held an 8-1 edge on shots-on-goal and a 6-2 edge on corner kicks.

Logan Kelley had one save in goal for the Bucs.

“We had a great turnaround in the second half,” said B-U coach Mike Donato. “University is a very quality team and we had to weather their pressure.

“We told the team at the start of the game that we had to capitalize on the few mistakes that University would make and we did that on the go- head goal.”

The Hawks will play host to Morgantown in Tuesday’s other sectional matchup, with the winners meeting Thursday at the site of the highest remaining seed.

In Thursday’s win, Buccaneer seniors Short, Kole Kessler, Ian Greenough, Ben Nolte and Tyler Hollen were honored.

Tom David Bosien and Ryan Hurst tallied first-half goals as B-U took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Hurst, Hollen and Short added scores in the second half. Earning assists on the night were Ward (2), Tom David Bosien and Dawson Carpenter.

Kelley had eight stops in goal, while Coleman Shreve also saw time. Greyson Howell had nine saves for Elkins and Jared Parsons tallied the Tigers’ lone goal.
