KINGWOOD – Preston tried to pack it in deep against the Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs in their Big 10 Conference contest Thursday night.
It didn’t matter to the Bucs if the Knights went five or six on defense as Zach Calef-Boring and Julien Larcher both had a pair of goals to help the Bucs down Preston by a 4-0 score.
“It was no surprise that Preston came out with a strong defensive strategy to try and speed up our play in the midfield and catch us on a counter attack,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “We made some mistakes in the first half, notably some bad passes and poor touches, but we started to clean that up as the first half went on and were much improved in the second half. The play in our midfield was much improved from Tuesday as we continue to get some continuity and guys back healthy.”
Calef-Boring had the lone goal of the first half in the 27th minute when he played a through ball from Caden Andrick and scored with a shot to the far post.
The Bucs made it 2-0 in the 50th minute when Larcher took a quick pass from Andrick and scored from 20 yards out.
Seven minutes later, Calef-Boring scored his second goal of the game when Christian Dowell made a pass from the right channel to him and he scored with a shot to the back corner of the net.
Larcher wrapped up the B-U scoring with a free kick from 25 yards out that sailed through the Preston keeper’s hands in the 79th minute.
The Bucs owned a 17-1 advantage in shots-on-goal and led in corner kicks by a 6-0 margin.
The Bucs were guilty of seven fouls while Preston was called for two.
B-U keeper Dalton Auvil made one save on the only shot he saw while Preston goalie Lane Brandt made 13 stops.
The Bucs are now 2-1-2 on the season heading into Tuesday’s home contest with Huntington.
Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
