Soccer Bucs and Princeton battle to 2-2 deadlock

PRINCETON – While the young and revamped Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs are still searching for their first win, head coach Mike Donato is pleased with how his team is coming along during the early part of the season.

The Bucs made the long trip to Princeton on Saturday and battled the Tigers to a 2-2 tie.

That left the Bucs 0-1-2 on the season.

“The heat and injuries definitely played a factor in the match,” remarked Donato. “Our guys were faced with different challenges throughout the match and they answered the call.”

Princeton took the lead in the 13th minute when Casey Geso scored on a penalty kick in the 13th minute of the game.

Zach Calef-Boring tied the game right before the first half ended when he took a rebound inside the penalty area and scored deadlocking the game at 1-1.

The Bucs opened the second half with a quick score when Branson Carpenter scored within the first minute with a follow-up shot from the top of the penalty area and had it deflect off the defender and go into the net giving the Bucs a 2-1 lead.

Andrew Paskowski tied the game at 2-2 in the 60th minute when the Bucs misplayed the ball outside of the penalty area and finished with a goal to the back corner.

Neither team was able to score the go-ahead score in the final 20 minutes.

“After we withstood some early pressure we were actually able to possess the ball in our midfield and create the chances we've been looking for all season,” stated Donato. “We saw some good through balls and passes to the outside, and even got some corner kicks from our pressure, which we've been lacking the first few games of the season. One positive we can take from this is we are starting to see the confidence of our younger players improve, which will help us greatly as the season progresses.”

The Bucs held an 11-6 margin in shots-on-goal and a 6-1 margin in corner kicks.

Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of three fouls while Tigers were called for five.

B-U keeper Dalton Auvil made four saves while Ashden Burgess turned away nine shots for Princeton.

The Bucs will return to action today at Lincoln.

Kickoff will start at 8 p.m.
