TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs scored twice in the first five minutes of the game but had to settle for a 2-2 tie with the Greenbrier East Spartans Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
Ryan Hurst wasted little time in getting the Bucs on the scoreboard with a goal just two minutes in.
Hurst dribbled into the penalty area and scored with a shot to the back corner of the net.
The Bucs were guilty of a foul in the penalty area just three minutes later, and Greenbrier East’s Lanty Rose scored on a penalty kick deadlocking the game at 1-1.
The Bucs took the kick-off and went right down the field and scored when Zach Calef-Boring made a cross from the right corner to Hurst who finished with a shot to the back post.
That gave the Bucs a 2-1 advantage.
Despite the early scoring, the game slowed down offensively as the next, and only goal the rest of the game, occurred in the 61st minute.
Greenbrier East’s Evan Volgelsong scored an unassisted goal from 25 yards out over B-U keeper Dalton Auvil’s head to the back post.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final 19 minutes of the game as the contest ended in a tie.
“We had a great start to this game,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “We stepped very well into space and were able to connect passes to create some good opportunities going forward. As the game went on Greenbrier East maintained possession and were able to wear us down, which typically doesn't happen but today we seemed to be off a step. They did pressure high with numbers, but our back line did really well of turning them out and not surrendering too many quality chances, and the ones we did Dalton Auvil was in great position and made some key saves. Although we surrendered too many corner kicks, we did a good job of defending them.”
The Bucs were outshot by an 11-10 margin and trailed in corner kicks by a 13-3 count.
Buckhannon-Upshur was guilty of four fouls while Greenbrier East was called for seven.
Auvil made 10 saves for the Bucs while Joe Cochran made seven saves for Greenbrier East.
The Bucs, now 1-0-1 overall, were slated to play Preston on Tuesday and will return to the pitch Thursday at home when they entertain Webster County at 6 p.m.
