Soccer Buccaneers pick up first win as they blast Lincoln by a 7-0 score

SHINNSTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Bucs were finally able to break through to the win column after downing the homestanding Lincoln Cougars by a dominating 7-0 score Tuesday night.

After suffering a loss and two ties in their first three-games, the Bucs had little issues getting win number one against the Cougars in a Big 10 Conference battle.

“I give our guys a lot of credit in picking up our first win of the season,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato. “Once again we were short-handed but all 15 guys stepped up big and played significant minutes to help us to the win.”

The Bucs raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest.

Branson Carpenter started the scoring for the Bucs with an unassisted goal in the third minute when he took advantage of a poor clear by Lincoln and made them pay with a goal to the near post.

Julien Larcher made it a 2-0 game for the Bucs three minutes later when he scored on a penalty kick.

Carpenter came back just a minute later when he put in a rebound shot off of Lincoln keeper Ty Williams to up the Buckhannon-Upshur lead to 3-0.

Caden Andrick wrapped up the first-half scoring for the Bucs in the 25th minute when he dribbled to the top of the penalty box and scored with a shot to the far corner.

The Bucs scored three second half goals in a four-minute span.

Caleby Haney finished off a corner kick by Zach Calef-Boring with a header to the back post in the 60th minute of the game.

A minute later, Andrick tallied his second goal of the game taking a cross from Kyle McCann and scoring with a shot to the back corner of the net treating the Bucs to a 6-0 advantage.

Calef-Boring wrapped up the scoring for the Bucs three minutes later with an unassisted goal to the back corner of the net.

“I thought we played much better in the second half than we did in the first,” noted Donato. “In the second half, we created much better chances, passed with a purpose, and kept a much better shape. I was happy to see certain guys get their first goals of the season or in their B-U career, and anytime you shut out a team and only give up one shot on goal, a lot of credit has to go to your defenders and goalkeeper.”

The Bucs owned a 17-1 margin in shots-on-goal as Donato noted and held a 12-1 margin in corner kicks.

Buckhannon-Upshur keeper Dalton Auvil made a save on the only shot he saw while Lincoln goalie Ty Williams made 10 saves.

The Bucs were guilty of three fouls while Lincoln was also called for three fouls.

The win gave the Bucs a 1-1-2 record heading into today’s road battle with Preston.

Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m.
